Ill start with Im 6ft 5in, so Im used to struggling to find things that may fit in my range. When I first saw this bedroll and the length I knew it would be a stretch but I didnt realize it would effectively be unusable for my height. The 84 (mind you Im 77 inch so again I knew this was a stretch) is from completely flat. So the flaps or rounds that would be the head foot of the log cot take away 6ft 8 inches from this total. Now I did not buy it as a log cot so much as a true bedroll. Next headache its not that wide! So there is no folding it over top of you like some of the other bedrolls you see out there, and the final kicker the pillow sleeve its lower than one of the slots for a log so when I put a pillow in the sleeve and lay on this my feet are actually off the roll all together. \r\n\r\nAll in all, I scored mine used off eBay and I am extremely satisfied with the quality and its not like its unusable by any means but after watching Daves videos I felt like I was mislead on the dimensions as the 84inch being the inside diameter of the cot and not including the slots for the logs. Ive got kids who are following in my shoes and it will be perfect for them while they are entering into the hobby with me. 6ft and under however this thing would probably be a solid fun addition to your kit. I will warn you its a heavy piece of kit
I've had this thing for several years now (I don't like writing reviews without thorough testing) and I still like it as much as I did when I found out about the initial concept of it. There are so many structures you can build around it. You can build it as a cot between tripods, a hammock, a slightly raised cot with some bushcraft woodworking, a groundcloth under a wool blanket to keep moisture off of you while cowboy camping, and a whole mess of other things. About 70% of the time I keep it in my truck in case of emergencies and I would be comfortable going out for a couple days with a few tools rolled up in it. I have two wool blankets rolled up in it and it could easily fit one more. The one issue is the weight but, as I said earlier, you don't have to pack too much else other than this roll. It has held up quite nicely over the years too.
Well thought out quality piece of gear. As a cot or hammock it excels. I roll an air pad, a military wool blanket, tarp and paracord up and could probably still fit at least 2 more military weight blankets in there no problem. It's not a bedroll in the sense of a cowboy type bivy, but paired with a haversack I can easily carry all I need for 2-3 nights
Hands down one of the best pieces of kit I have bought. Purchased 4 years ago and besides some stains and the leather straps being mistreated (completely my fault) this thing is going strong. So many uses and setup techniques, and the raised bed platform makes sleeping easy on my back. Worth every penny and can't recommend this enough.
