A Legacy and Product You Can Depend On
Our brand was born and raised in the Northwoods of Minnesota. Duluth Pack is proudly the oldest canvas and leather bag and pack manufacturer in the USA. Continuously since 1882, Duluth Pack has blazed the trail for manufacturing quality packs, bags, and more. Our company’s mission is simple; we handcraft the highest-quality American made canvas and leather goods. All of our manufactured gear is guaranteed for life on all craftsmanship and hardware. We stand behind our products because they stand the test of time. Buy it once. Have it for life.
Duluth Pack’s story began on December 12th, 1882 with a French-Canadian immigrant named Camille Poirier. After migrating west to Duluth, Minnesota in 1870, Camille Poirier built a small leather shoe shop with leather scraps and tools he had on hand. As demand for durable gear grew alongside the booming railway, port, timber, and mining industries, Camille Poirier began outfitting workers with his handcrafted products. On December 12, 1882, after painstaking design and field-testing, Camille Poirier patented his 'C. Poirier Pack Sack' featuring a unique tumpline function. Duluth Pack, as the brand would later be known, was born. Over time, Duluth Pack’s designs became the go-to product for portaging and canoeing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. This original pack design is still handcrafted and sold today as the #2 Original Pack.
In 1911, Poirier sold his pack business to Duluth Tent & Awning Company, which later became the Duluth Pack brand known today. During those early frontier days, packs were manufactured for the rugged tradesman of the Midwest. From hay wagon covers to heavy canvas aprons, quality became a staple of the brand.
With the twenties right around the corner, Duluth Pack shifted focus to meet America’s demand for travel and recreation gear. Partnering with the first Abercrombie & Fitch store on Madison Avenue, we expanded our reach, creating the durable, premium-quality packs, luggage, and accessories we’re known for today.
While history has evolved, Duluth Pack’s values have remained strong for over a century. Every piece of canvas and leather is still cut, sewn, riveted, and crafted at our original historic site. Pride is at the core of our brand, reflected in the hand-signed white tags inside every bag—an authentic American-made touch.
Today, Duluth Pack's customer base and community has grown international, invoking adventure, not just for outdoor enthusiasts but for everyday life. Although the canoeing lifestyle will forever be engrained in the company’s heritage, the brand has evolved with its customers and their lifestyles. Duluth Pack is a community for everyone, outdoorsman or not.
Duluth Pack gear is handcrafted to be handed down, carrying stories from one generation to the next. Made with premium materials like rugged canvas and high-quality leather, each pack is built for durability, adventure, and a lifetime of use. Designed to withstand the test of time, our gear isn’t just made to last—it’s made to be passed on.
