Broad axes have evolved to meet the needs of builders who create straight, square timbers from logs.
Gransfors Bruks Axe Models 1800 and 1700 are their most highly developed versions of the straight axe. In their massively elegant design the head thickens radically just abaft the cutting edge, creating an arrow-like profile with very wide bevels on both sides. These bevels, easily 1" wide, let the user swing the axe at a slight angle to clear the eye and handle while shaving surfaces as cleanly as a bent axe. Model 1800's head weighs 3 lbs, with a 7-1/2" face; its handle is 20" long. Model 1700, distinguished by its unique integral forged iron handle sheath, weighs in at 3 lbs., 12 oz. Its face is 7-1/2" wide, and its handle is 20" long.
