I just recently purchased this bag. I waited about 2 weeks to do this review. The bag is excellently made, wonderful leather, and the color is beautiful (Burgundy). After I broke the straps in with my hands, it is a super comfortable bag to carry. I love it. I will only purchase Duluth pack products from here on out. Next on my list is the Deluxe Daypack! My only wish for the classic rucksack is I wish it came with a leather handle so I don't have to carry it by a strap when I'm just picking it up. Otherwise 5 stars, love the bag, well worth the money and the quality is outstanding. (Posted on 8/23/2014)
Classic RucksackReview by Richard
I've had my rucksack sonce 2003, it has been to over 24 countries with me. Nothing compares to it's usefullness as a small carry on or as a bag to use duing sightseeing and as a simple briefcase for meetings. As it aged I began using it for fishing and hunting day trips, works great. Still lokks almost new and I have no problems with it. (Posted on 11/21/2013)
Love itReview by CJ
I used my rucksack for 10 years and love it but the canvas across the bottom back, just above the seam, split. Don't know if it can be repaired. I would like to have a leather strip sewn there so I can use it again. (Posted on 10/16/2013)
just o.k.Review by wilson
My old pack died, the zippers gave up. I searched for a pack that had no zippers and settled on the Duluth Rucksack. I purchased the waxed cotton model to match my Filson coat. The quality of construction is not above average, the leather edges are not waxed or sealed, an operation done by me. The angle of the straps is too severe, and I am constantly adjusting the pack. I use a pack everyday and this one will take some getting used to. (Posted on 9/26/2013)
Finally, the perfect bag!Review by Kate
I just received my bag yesterday (in burgundy), and I am so pleased with it already. I don't often write reviews, in fact this is my first, but I am so excited about this bag that I feel like I have to write a review. After spending 4 years in college trying to find the perfect bag, I have finally found it! This bag will be perfect for school (I'm a grad student), and perfect for a travel/weekend bag (I go abroad a lot). The size is just right, the color looks good, it's lightweight and roomy, and the overall look is really sleek, I've just had it a day and received so many compliments. Hopefully I will have and use this bag for many years to come! (Posted on 4/27/2013)
One GREAT packReview by brblacksmith
I have had this pack since 2001. Its been through college, travel, camping, and hunting. It is finally thread bare in the bottom, but a quick patch job got me through that last semester of college. Great product well worth the money and the only backpack that lasted me more than one year. (Posted on 4/16/2013)
Great PackReview by Ericism
I just received my new Rucksack (Black on Black) and it is awesome! As indicated in other reviews it is bigger that expected, which i am glad. It is build solid (and in the USA!) the leather is heavy duty and appears to be very good quality. (Posted on 2/22/2013)
HappyReview by mclfinewine
Received this as a Christmas gift this year, have used it once so far and am very happy with it, I do hope that the leather softens as it did cause a little irritation on my shoulder as I am used to a padded strap. I love the look of it and totally love how much it holds.
Looking forward to many years of use -hiking, being #1 but I do travel several times a year, so it will also come in handy on the plane as I can stuff it full. Thank you (Posted on 12/30/2012)
classic!Review by Janep
I have had this pack for about a month now and I have to say that it has been serving me well. I did have a problem with the leather straps digging into my shoulders, but after moistening the straps with some water and wearing the pack for a hike, the straps moulded themselves to my body shape and now the pack fits like a well worn pair of shoes! Love my custom Classic Rucksack!Review by backpackmidwife
Just got my custom Rucksack, and it is love at first sight. I've been eyeing this pack for over 2 years and finally made the plunge. Added a top grap loop, 2 side lash tabs, and a hanging pocket on the inside for just a bit more money. Duluth was wonderful answering all my questions and getting back to me with my requests. The pack is gorgeous and just how I wanted it. The waxed canvas is beautiful and substantial. The leather straps will need breaking in, but I know from experience that once they are broken in this will be my most comfortable pack. And a huge thank you to Carolyn for making me such a wonderful pack! I can't say enough about the customer service and the quality workmanship. I will continue to recommend Duluth to my family and friends. (Posted on 11/30/2012)
Great looking and functional pack/purseReview by Lola
I used this rucksack on my trip to Washington. It has all the room you need for day hiking and more. I had two light jackets with me, camera, kindle, wallet, and water bottles for 4 people. It is larger in capacity than it looks on the picture. Only drawback I experienced is that the straps are really wide and hard, and are placed so far apart that the leather in between the straps tends to buckle out and stabs you in between the shoulders. Duluthpack should sew the straps closer together on the top and that will be fixed. Other than that, awesome pack in looks and functionality. I will be using this every day, so I'm hoping when the leather wears a bit the issues will be resolved. Thanks Duluth pack, I love your product. (Posted on 8/12/2012)
Great little packReview by Hodgeman
I've had this pack for 7 years...used and abused all over Alaska. Way better than any nylon pack ever made. My only wish is for a slightly larger version. (Posted on 5/15/2012)
Constant CompanionsReview by Liesl
After lusting after my partner's Rucksack, I finally got one about 2 yeas ago. What a great pack. Here a a few of my favorite things: 1) low profile when not full. 2) fits easily and well over a winter coat! 3) comfortable on a bicycle, 4) leather top flap doubles as a mat for a packed lunch, 5) holds a surprising amount of stuff. It's built to last--about a year ago, my big dog chewed a 1-inch tear into the beefy leather strap. I was able to stitch it closed with leather lacing, and it has performed perfectly since. That says a lot. Recently, our Rucksacks accompanied both of us to New Zealand (along with my Rambler). It was simply perfect on the plane, in the airport, on city walks and bike rides, hiking on beaches, and on the grueling 1-day Tongariro Crossing. And it looks great. (Posted on 3/6/2011)

This bag has been all around the world with me. I use it to commute to work on my bicycle, to travel internationally. Breaks in nicely over time. Quality is superb. (Posted on 2/17/2011)
Best in its classReview by Outstanding Bag
First of all the picture on the website does not show the true beauty of this pack. I am constantly getting compliments on how nice this pack looks. But looks is not why I purchased this pack. This pack is great! It holds more than you would think. In the main compartment there is enough room for a rolled up windbreaker type jacket, extra t-shirt, water bottle, a couple of books and magazines, toiletries, PSP, small laptop and lunch with room to spare. The external pocket is perfect for passport, small notepad/pens, mini flashlight, ipod, keys, wallet etc...The leather straps are more comfortable than any padded modern pack I have owned. It is a perfect size for air travel. This pack also slips on and off with ease yet fits snug to your back above the waistline. The construction is solid. I also love that when you open up the main compartment, right next to the Duluth tag is an American flag tag, reminding me how much it is worth it to pay a few extra bucks for a quality American product. The only down side to this pack is that it does not have a hand carry loop on top but this pack is so good it really does not matter. (Posted on 7/15/2010)
solid/versatileReview by ddmac
Keep it in the car/boat for the impromptu short hike or picnic, have had it for only six months but is wearing in nicely, it is very secure on the back and stays put when exploring off the trail and almost forget its there. It caries my favorite picnic foods and a poncho with ease. (Posted on 7/15/2010)
durable/ best one around Review by whistle1
Have used this bag for school, traveling and just to contain my overflow in the car, still in tip top shape after 12 years and the leather and color are still beautiful. (Posted on 7/15/2010)
The best rucksack/backpack availableReview by a wonderful bag to carry
I searched and searched and finally found the Web site for Dultuth Pack on line. I need a strong but light backpack for an extended trip to Asia. The people at Dultuth were amazing to deal with and patient beyond belief. I explained to them what I required. The first backpack they sent me was to large because I am rather small. When I telephoned them, they said, 'no problem' and sent me without charging me for shipping the Classic Rucksack". It more than did its jobs. I traveled for more than two months in Asia and stuffed my rucksack, and it looks as if it were brand new. Very few products are that good. Moreover, it was admired where ever I went. More importantly, it is light and holds a great deal of stuff. I carried a medium format Mamya Camera forty rolls of 120 film, filters, a change of clothing, (folded up as small as possible), a net-book, and other assorted items in the pocket on the front.
Since I was doing a great amount of traveling by plane from country to country, it was essential to keep my luggage portable. While my suitcase bought for the trip developed a tear, nothing happened to the Classic Rucksack.
I hope that this superb Company continues to thrive and grow. But I would be very sorry if it grew and shipped its factory to China. The quality of the products that Duluth Pack manufactures is of the highest quality.
The Company is unique and should consider advertising in The New Yorker magazine. (Posted on 6/22/2010)
