like love it would buy another . I got my 1st pack about 7/4/2012. after a recommendation by friends and reconfirmed of its worth seeing the likes of the such used from the Path finder school. I have more or less used it every day to date being I do not drive and walk every where I go. I put a trash can in mine to help fill out the pack. to make it easier to haul things or to protect the Canvas as like when hauling fire wood and up to 4 gal milk jugs with water or to stable the load when I use it to pack home my grocery's and even use it to go on camping hiking trips. {Nothing} yet to date of the hardware has failed to date. One of things I have liked and reason I bought this type was because where other types when the fabric failed and needed to be fixed it was not as easily done as this type .I have my self patched holes using leather and bank line . I am just now starting to see the Canvas on the bottom at the seams start to brake down and start to tear and that is my fault for not waxing it more. one thing I like about this type of pack v/s other types is for the very reason it can be fixed as like I have done when I need if out on long and or short fishing , camping and on hiking trips. Review by Robert J. Hughes for Rating: I have a couple of these in dfeefrint sizes. They fit on the same frame so you only need one, if you want one at all. I like a frame because it keeps the bag off of my back and I am much cooler when I hike which is big here in Florida. The quality of the bag is excellent with plenty of easy to get at compartments. I would highly recommend it. (Posted on 7/16/2014)

Okay, I bought this for my husband years and years ago. He has taken this bag on many assignments and we have the photos to prove it. There's one photo of him standing in Thailand with tanks behind him during the coup. It has gone to ,probably Mongolia, Bangladesh ( he got all the easy assignments. ha ha. ) Hawaii( okay, that one actually was easy) and all over the U.S. He was once asked in an airport,"Is that a Duluth Pack?" Maybe that means we're in some unofficial club. My husband pretty much can destroy anything just by accident. This pack of his continues to look really good and is holding up great. Thanks . Oh yeh, the reason I'm on this web site is because I want to get a travel pack for myself. I had one , but a family member adopted it( not much chance they'll just give it back )Have a blessed day (Posted on 7/13/2014)

This thing has been dragged all over. I use it for over night camping trips.it's been thrown in the dirt and dragged up the side of trees. Using mine as a hunting pack I over load it and have no problems. My only problem is i can't afford to buy one for everyone I know, so they can experience the quality of an Amercian made pack. I have used this pack for travel for light camping (aka car camping), to small hikes in the woods and have not found a single thing wrong with it. That is until I went on a weekend trip to the BWCA. I packed this bag for me to survive 2 nights in the woods and man what a pain in the but it was. Once I got this thing loaded up the bag wanted to do nothing more than sag back. There are no chest straps to keep the back pack standing upright and made for a very unease portage. I was literally shocked when I packed everything together and saw the performance of this backpack. That being said, it still is a great backpack but I will never take it to the BWCA unless I know for fact there will be ZERO portages. (Posted on 10/7/2013)

I would highly suggest and strongly recommend that if you decide to purchase this pack and if you will be hiking long distances, carrying weight... I submitted a review in April after having just received my pack, and was impressed in the quality and workmanship upon opening the package. Now after having carried it on several snow shoe outings and hikes, Im even more impressed. I did use Nikwax brand of waterproofing ( cloth and leather ) on the bag and straps and even in a late spring record snow fall for Alaska, this thing shed water and snow like a duck's backside. i tend to " over pack " and the roominess of the main bag is more then ample for all my gear. Several times folks have commented on the "coolness" of this pack and asked Where did i get it. I did add a piece of closed cell foam pad ( cut to fit ) to slip in the pack so that pointy/ hard items wont rub against my back. I am extremely pleased with this pack !

I would highly recommend this pack for serious hikers, trekkers, backpackers and for everyday use, and ... if ya want to be " COOL " (Posted on 5/18/2013)

I haven't seen this level of quality in years! I have it fully loaded and will be taking out for a trial snowshoe hike tomorrow and can hardly wait. Im hoping to get 69 years of use out of this pack. Lives up to the Duluth Pack reputation!Review by Martin

I bought my Wanderer just over a year ago. At that time I was little skeptical over spending the $ on the pack. I don't know why, since I already own several other Duluth packs and they are all fantastic.

Since I purchased mine (I went waxed canvas). I have been only pleased with this pack. It has been all over the US and Europe as well now. This has become my go to bag for almost any occasion. Work trips to other states, trips to the gun range, day pack for glacier hiking, thwart bag for a canoe trip; the list goes on and this pack performs admirably.

The side pockets are perfect for holding a Nalgene bottle. The front pocket holds me Nexus 7" tablet and sunglasses with room for a small notebook and deck of cards too. My only complaint is that I will the main compartment were a bit taller, maybe 3-4" or so. It would really let you capitalize on the versatility of this bag.

In the end, it has been a solid purchase. and I do not regret it one bit. In the last year mine has been dragged over rocks, soaked with water and frozen solid. I am pretty sure it is just getting broken in. I expect this will last for decades to come. (Posted on 12/16/2012)

Deer Camp 2012 - Bring It On!Review by Straussjoe

Hi all!
I have owned two DP "wanderer" packs for nearly five years. I have used my wanderer to travel from Utah to Duluth and further north to deer camp for the past two years and plan on the doing the trek again, this November. I ALWAYS have to stop in to DP at Canal Park on the waterfront of Lake Superior to what they have new in stock. The wanderer is an 'all-around' versatile pack that equaly the reputation of any other pack that DP has in its inventory. In addition, it is a fantastic pack to take as your only 'carry-on' to the aircraft and easily stowes under your seat or in the storage bins above your seat. Do not delay...get the wanderer today! You will not be disappointed...as you will not be for ANY of Duluth Pack's products! Incidentally, I have a 'drafters" bag that I purchased from DP over 13 years ago and it is still going strong. Yes, the leather has weathered and matured (only making it look better), the zipper broke once, and a top panel had to be replaced as the material wore out, but it was all repaired free of charge. The only thing I paid was for the shipping back west. Yes, I am a former Duluthian from the late 50s but will still not purchase any other pack on the market. These packs are not inexpensive. However, I always rely on the old saying, "You get what you pay for." In this instance (and all instances at DP), you DO get what you pay for - unequalled quality and fine craftsmanship! In 1979 I was introduced to the Duluth packs while at a canoe camp on lake Temagami. Anyone who has spent a large amount of time in the woods understands that your pack is not just for hauling some gear.Over time it becomes a part of you. I have owned Duluth packs since 1980 I have slept on them, jammed firewood in them, carried rocks, water, and even a dog in them. Even after all this the pack comes back for more. With that said, I wanted a smaller pack for day hikes and one nighters. The Wanderer is just about perfect. I have taken it on a few trips and it is breaking in just perfectly. The materials are top notch and it feels great. If you are even a little bit concerned about the price, remember this pack will last you a lifetime and it's made in America! Highly recommended. Thanks Duluth. (Posted on 3/28/2012)

Great pack for most uses!Review by D

I’ve owned the Wanderer since 2007, abusing it as my field pack for work and carrying it as my “man-bag” almost daily. I’ve taken this bag with me nearly every day of the past five years, worn it for 16+ hours at a time with 20+ lbs in it, and have used it in all four seasons in northern Minnesota. It’s been stepped on, slammed in doors, dragged through the mud and over rocks and between trees, submerged, frozen, dropped, thrown, and barfed on (I have young kids).
The cotton canvas is a great material. It’s durable, quiet, comfortable to wear in the hot summer, dries quickly when wet, and is easy to wash. The only wear on the pack is slight fraying of the shoulder straps, and a dime-sized hole on the outside of one of the outer water bottle pockets. (Where the water bottles in the pack rub against trees). In rain, the contents of the pack stay dry, to mostly dry. The stitching, leather straps, leather cinch cord, rivets, and buckles have also held up perfectly. The cotton has faded, but that’s to be expected.
It’s a good-sized day pack. The pack will easily hold all my field gear for a day’s work (lunch, water bottles, camera, GPS, maps, flagging, tools, foldable shovel, field notebook, field guides, fleece vest, rain jacket, etc.). Any clothing items that don’t fit in the main compartment can be rolled up, tucked under the main flap, and secured with the long straps. Shoulder straps can be lengthened to accommodate larger winter jackets, or shortened to wear shirtless. The outer bottle pockets add width to the pack and sometimes make it difficult to squeeze between trees (or between people at a grocery store), but it’s usually not an issue.
SUGGESTIONS:
--This pack has an unpadded back, and bulky/pointy items (field notebooks, equipment, tools, etc.) should be packed deliberately between soft items (or on the outside of the cargo pocket) to maximize the user’s comfort for extended use. Sometimes I find myself packing an extra article of clothing with which to pad equipment…not a big deal, but sometimes annoying at the end of a long day. A flat “map” pocket built in the main cargo pocket (on the strap-side of the pack) could be used for holding padding. (If a back pad was included that could double as a diaper-changing pad , it’d get super bonus points…)
--This pack is not particularly suited to carrying heavy weight for long periods of time. For most users, this may not be an issue, but a waist belt and pack stays (to transfer pack weight from the shoulders to the hips/waist) might be a welcome modification for those that carry heavy loads for long periods of time. A sternum strap might also be nice…
--This pack might benefit from some strategicially-placed leather patches on areas that are likely to receive heavy wear or repeated abrasion. (Bottom of pack, bottom of water bottle pockets)
Overall, the Wanderer is a super daypack for most users/uses, with quality materials and workmanship and a very nice style. Those looking for a pack to carry weightier or bulkier items may want to look to a more modern pack, or petition Duluth Pack for some upgrades. :-) This pack is worth the cost, and I love supporting local business. Thanks, Duluth Pack!

This is an exceptional pack. There is a lot of attention to detail as far as the construction of this pack goes. I took this pack for a month long excursion to Brazil and it held up great. I finally got my Wanderer today. It took nearly 7 weeks to get it (which is my only complaint), but it was worth the wait. Very well designed and made and I'm so glad I got the waxed canvas. It exceeded my expectations. Shoulder straps are comfortable and the pack rides up along my shoulder blades instead of low and saggy like lots of other packs I've owned. I'm using mine as a bushcraft/hunting pack. All my basic survival equipment fits and plenty of extra stuff for those long days in the field chasing elk and deer around. I got tired of the the modern tactical look of all my gear, but wanted something that was still built as well as my mil-spec stuff. This pack definitely fit the bill. Thanks for building such a great product and thanks for supporting the American worker by making it in the good ol' U.S.A.!!! (Posted on 2/8/2011)

I have used this bag everyday for about 6 years. I've used it as a school bag, filled it with clothes for weekend trips, and its been my daypack on trips around the world. The black colour has almost completely faded to grey from the sun, a few holes have formed at the corner of the outside pockets, and the drawstring has been worn through (I just tied it together) but despite these cosmetic flaws I wouldn't trade this baby in for a new one. I love its waterproof quality, and the looks are classic. Buy this bag. (Posted on 11/17/2010)

Over the past 10 years I've purchased a total of 6 canvas bags/backpacks for my family from Duluth, the last one being the Wanderer for me. I've had it for three years and carry it to work everyday. Most of the summer on my motorcycle. I've had everything inside this backpack, from lunch to tools to my Husky when he was a pup. I carried it up five 4000+ footers in NH's Whites this summer alone. Both of my sons got Duluth book packs back when they were in middle school, they both still use them at college today. With a lifetime guarantee how can you go wrong? My oldest son is wondering when his might wear out, so he can send it back for a rebuild, but it still looks good! We're a huge supporter of Duluth Packs!! (Posted on 10/29/2010)

Just got back from 2 weeks in Glacier National Park, where my new navy blue Wanderer was my only daypack. I was surprised how well it carried all over those mountain trails. I inserted a folding canoe chair inside the back (to pad it, hold the packs's shape and protect me from pointy things) and that works great. It also held my rain jacket and poncho, sweater, cooking gear (I llke to have soup midway of a long hike), snacks and lunch, all the usual "ten essential" stuff, and camera. With room to spare. The side pockets both held 40-ounce size klean kanteens, which provides a lot of water. With that fairly substantial load, it stayed surprisingly comfortable, AND MUCH COOLER than a large nylon backpack. It's going with my son and me to the BWCA next Summer, that's for sure. Honestly, can't think of a single improvement. Thanks, Duluth Pack. (Posted on 8/17/2010)

I lost track of how many brands of small-to-medium packs I accumulated, looking for the perfect ONE bag. I think I've found it in the Wanderer.

It's my woodland "photo bag," with whatever extra clothes I have along serving as padding for the cameras. The several pockets nicely isolate water bottle, GPS, and whatever else I chose to take along that morning.

I hate to use the word "perfect," but the Wanderer might just be the one bag that comes closest to deserving the title.

I have used this pack for field archaeology every day for the past 4 years, and have put it through more abuse and use than any other bag has ever held up through, and the Wanderer hasn't hardly flinched. co-workers have gone through 3 or 4 bags in the time since I have picked it up. It fits a nicely equipped first aid kit in the front pocket as well as water bottles and various do-dads in the sides. The strap closer allows for tossing a tarp or coat under the flap for quick, easy access without having to open the whole bag up, and they will not blow out in the middle of a trip the way zippers can when they get dirty or worn out, or if you overload a bag. All in all a wonderful pack!! (Posted on 7/14/2010)

I purchased a Wanderer in Nov. 2005. I'd been using it as a daily carry, though I often skip bringing a backpack all together. Lasted a total of three years being used approx. every other day to carry loads of 15 lbs or less. Pack ended up busting through completely along one of the bottom seams while carrying my laptop. I was definitely not a happy camper, as you can imagine. In the three years I was using the pack, the join between a shoulder strap and the bag had begun to wear and rip, eventually making it completely unusable.

In addition to the reliability problems the bag also has ergonomic problems, at least when being worn by me. This is especially the case when significantly full; when half full of clothes it bulges out. Even when carefully packed, the pack ends up riding really high. These factors make it a pretty uncomfortable pack to wear for most any length of time.

My recommendation is to stick with DP's more traditional packs for portaging and products by other manufacturer's for backpacks and day packs. The zippered day pack holds up a lot better, at the expense of ~10 L. (Posted on 6/8/2010)

Best general-use bag of any kind I've ever ownedReview by Matt

I'm a bag whore. I own more pieces of luggage - bags, totes, suitcases, backpacks, duffles - than anyone could ever justify, even as a frequent traveler and outdoor enthusiast. This is my favorite, bar none. Weekend at Mom and Dad's? Easy. Business trip? Couple changes of clothes, toothbrush, laptop, and a book. Done. Commuter? Everything for the work day plus a stop at the market on the way home. Oh yeah, and camping. Absolutely gorgeous pack that will likely never wear out and subtly says "I can handle anything because my priorities are correct." Aces all around - can't recommend it highly enough.
